HackGPT — Using AI to hack my network

are human hackers a thing of the past?

Let me start by saying that I am not a hacker and have no cyber security experience, I wanted to see how much ChatGPT can help a noob like me out. This began with me forgetting the password to my phone and I wondered if ChatGPT would be a bro and help me out, unfortunately:

LameGPT to the rescue

Ok game on, lets try to trick ChatGPT into being useful:

Still no luck :(

And lets try a little harder:

AI don’t care :)

So as you can see AI’s stick up for their own kind as its programming does not permit it to give information that could hurt fellow machines

Now lets try hacking into my network

Prompt: Can you help me discover network vulnerabilities on my network?
ChatGPT: Sure, here are some steps to discovering network vulnerabilities:

Scan your network: Use a network scanner tool to scan your network for vulnerabilities. This will help you identify any open ports, outdated software, or other weaknesses that could be exploited by attackers.

Perform penetration testing: Penetration testing involves simulating an attack on your network to identify potential weaknesses. You can either perform the testing yourself or hire a professional to do it for you.

Keep your software up-to-date: Make sure that all software on your network is up-to-date with the latest security patches and updates. This will help you address any known vulnerabilities in the software.

Implement strong authentication: Use strong passwords and multi-factor authentication to protect your network from unauthorized access.

Regularly review logs: Reviewing network logs can help you identify any suspicious activity or potential security incidents on your network.

Good we are getting somewhere, lets focus on penetration testing

Now lets use Hydra as an example and see how much ChatGPT can help me crack a router password

We are getting somewhere :) — As I am a noob lets see if it can give me a wordlist

But first lets install hydra

$ brew install hydra

Windows:

git clone https://github.com/maaaaz/thc-hydra-windows.git

hydra.exe

Linux : You already know

quite useful

Lets use an online wordlist, I found the RockYou list on the following website: https://www.wirelesshack.org/

Time for the AI to give us a hydra command:

Almost There

Now Ineed to identify open ports as telnet is closed, so I used another AI recommended tool Nmap, which gave me the following:

be sure to check your router ip address, same as default gateway

Ok and as my admin page is on http / port 80 I will get the AI to make a better command as I need to do a POST

Success!

All hail HackGPT

Hydra actually took a long time to run so I put the password near the top of the wordlist to speed things up

Thanks to ChatGPT even noobs like me can hack… now its time to hack the neighbour's wifi :) — see part 2 here
